Mouth sores and gum disease are becoming more prevalent every year.  It is estimated that 30 to 50 percent of the population will experience receding gums or periodontal disease in their lifetime.   When it comes to cold sores or mouth ulcers, the numbers can be even higher courtesy of stress, prescription medication and poor diets.

Ionized acidic water can effectively relieve the pain of mouth ulcers and help speed up the healing process.  It has also been used to improve reduce bleeding of gums and improve overall gum health.

Here are some tried and true guidelines for using both ionized alkaline and acidic waters to help you have a healthier mouth and a healthier smile…

Brush with Alkaline, Rinse with Acidic.

The next time you brush your teeth, using ionized alkaline water instead of tap water to wet your toothbrush for brushing.  Using ionized alkaline water for brushing can help your toothpaste do a better job removing food particles and bacterial from your teeth and gum line.

If you use a special toothpaste for sensitive teeth or extra whitening, the same properties that help your body absorb nutrients from supplements taken with ionized alkaline water can also help maximize the effectiveness of your specialized toothpaste.

When rinsing, use ionized acidic water.  As with any mouthwash you’ll want to rinse for 30 to 60 seconds to get the best benefits.  The ionized acidic water will help rinse away any toothpaste left behind and kill remaining germs or bacteria.

Most people notice that problems with bleeding gums start to go away after they begin using ionized acidic water as a mouthwash.  Improved color and texture of gums is also commonly reported after regular use of ionized acidic water after brushing.

Finally, rinsing your toothbrush with ionized acidic water will help kill any germs or bacteria left behind after brushing.  It can also help reduce growth of germs and bacteria when your toothbrush isn’t being used.

Mouth Ulcers

Mouth ulcers or “canker sores” are something that almost everyone will experience at some point.  The most common causes are weakened immune system and reactions to some prescription medications.   Over-consumption of acidic or acid producing foods and high stress levels can also cause mouth sores.  One common side-effect of many cancer medications is recurring mouth ulcers.

Over the counter treatments offer temporary relief of the pain but do little or nothing to help heal mouth sores.  It doesn’t take long for the pain-relieving properties to wash away in the mouth.

While some mouthwashes can help the healing process, they often contain alcohol, artificial colors, sweeteners or flavors that many people try to avoid.  If you have a chronic condition, the cost of over the counter treatments and mouthwashes can add up over time.

Acidic water produced by water ionizers has been used successfully by many to ease the pain of mouth ulcers and actually help them heal more quickly.  Unlike common over the counter treatments, ionized acidic water contains no chemicals or alcohol, nothing chemical or artificial to enter the bloodstream.

A 30 to 60 second rinse with ionized acidic water can relieve pain quickly.  In most cases the sores begin to heal much more quickly than if left to heal on their own or when treated by common over the counter remedies.

Repeating the rinse multiple times a day will offer the best healing benefits.  Many who purchased a water ionizer to use as part of their cancer treatment program found that regular “mouth washes” with ionized acidic water reduced the frequency and severity of mouth ulcers.

What if I Accidentally Swallow?  Is it Safe?

Whether you are using a mouthwash or some other topically applied treatment, chances are you’re going to be swallowing some of whatever you are using.  The same is true with ionized acidic water.

What isn’t the same is exactly what you’ll be swallowing.  While not recommended for drinking on its own, ionized acidic water does not contain chemicals, alcohol, artificial colors, sweeteners, flavor or sugar.  It is filtered water that is made acidic courtesy of the alkaline/acidic separation that happens during the ionization process.

While we’re talking about a healthy, happy mouth I’ll mention cold sores – again, these can be caused by improper diet, stress or as a side effect of certain medications.

You can treat cold sores by either spraying ionized acidic water to the area or applying a soft cloth that has been soaked in ionized acidic water directly to the area.  Spraying can offer the fastest relief and if you are able to store your spray bottle in a refrigerator it can be especially soothing when applied.

Remember, drinking ionized alkaline water can help boost the body’s immune system and correct the imbalances that cause problems like bleeding gums, mouth ulcers and cold sores from the inside.  Using ionized acidic water topically can help speed the healing process and keep your mouth healthy and happy from the outside.
